Location:

The AMOY Hotel is conveniently located in Singapore’s central business district on the edge of Chinatown. We travelled from Changi Airport by public transport taking the MRT from the airport to Expo Station where we changed to the Downtown Line. From there, we continued to Telok Ayer Station which has access adjacent to the hotel (Exit D), making the journey very easy.

Arrival and check-in:

Arriving at the AMOY Hotel Singapore felt like stepping into a beautifully preserved slice of history. The entrance leads through the former Fuk Tak Chi Temple, now restored and filled with artefacts that tell the story of early Chinese settlers in Singapore. The AMOY is one of the most unique hotels we’ve ever stayed in and the temple entrance provided us with a wonderfully atmospheric introduction to the hotel that set the tone for our stay.

Check-in was warm and seamless. We were welcomed with refreshing cups of jasmine tea which was a small gesture that made us feel cared for after our lengthy flight.

The front desk team were attentive and friendly, taking time to explain the heritage behind the building and the amenities available. We were then escorted up to our room and assisted with our luggage which added a thoughtful and personalised touch.

The room:

We were booked into a deluxe room which, while compact, was beautifully designed and cleverly laid out. A small step led down to the sleeping area creating a cosy, intimate feel with its traditional wooden shutters adorning the windows. The room showcased heritage accents such as Chinese stools and a porcelain wash basin.

Our guest room was tastefully decorated with warm tones and heritage inspired details that echoed the character of the building. Everything was on hand for a relaxing stay including an extremely comfortable bed with the softest of duck down pillows on which we were asleep in seconds after our long journey. Amenities included a well-stocked complimentary minibar, premium tea and coffee and complimentary snacks.

The bathroom was surprisingly spacious, featuring a powerful rain shower and a Chinese inspired blue patterned wash basin. Overall, the room struck a perfect balance between charm, comfort and practicality.

Breakfast is served just across the courtyard in the stylish Off-Beat contemporary café that contrasts beautifully with the hotel’s historic exterior. We chose to sit out on the terrace and enjoyed a peaceful, relaxing start to the day.

The food was excellent – our smashed avocado on toast was fresh and flavoursome with the accompanying juice and cappuccinos just what we needed to ease us into a day of sightseeing. The setting, combined with the quality of the food made breakfast one of the highlights of our stay.

The Facilities:

Inspired by the stories of Singapore’s early Chinese immigrants, each guest room has a unique layout and intricate design mirroring the lives of early Chinese immigrants with a contemporary twist. The hotel comprises 37 rooms from cosy singles fitted with a modern Oriental day bed to the deluxe double in which we stayed.

AMOY’s unique charm comes from its deep connection to Singapore’s heritage. The hotel showcases curated displays, including old sewing machines, craftsmen’s tools and a replica of the original well that once served the community — all visible in the reception and lobby areas. These touches made our visit to the hotel feel almost like a living museum.

Although the four-star AMOY itself is a boutique property, guests have complimentary access to the swimming pool and gym at its five-star sister hotel, The Clan, located just around the corner.

The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Chinatown, making it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding attractions. We joined one of the ‘Ode to the past’ tours offered at the Chinatown Heritage Centre which can be arranged through the hotel as part of AMOY’s curated stay experience celebrating Singapore’s rich history.

The 90 minute guided themed tour at the Chinatown Heritage Centre offered an intimate look into early migrant life, especially once we stepped into the recreated dwelling houses and tiny shop spaces. Moving through the narrow corridors and dim, compact rooms, the guide brought the stories to life — explaining how entire families lived, worked, and slept in spaces no larger than a modern bedroom.

The cluttered shopfronts, worn tools and everyday objects made it easy to imagine the noise, smells and routines of the past. The guide’s storytelling left us with a deeper appreciation of the resilience and resourcefulness of early Chinese migrants and a tour of the Heritage Centre is highly recommended. After the tour we were invited to enjoy a refreshing beverage and a slice of locally baked cake next door at the herbal milk tea shop AMACHA. The recipes are inspired by age old remedies as the tea house is the first in Singapore to blend traditional Chinese medicine with contemporary tastes. I opted for ‘Grandmother’s Remedy’ which is AMACHA’s signature drink containing chrysanthemum, bamboo leaves, dandelion and monk fruit. It tasted delicious and felt rejuvenating. AMACHA

The hotel is within a ten minute walk to the shopping and leisure areas of Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Chinatown with popular spots such as the Lau Pa Sat hawker centre and the CapitaSpring rooftop on the doorstep.

AMOY Singapore is a truly unique place to stay as it’s a perfect blend of heritage, comfort, and attentive service. Although located in a central location, the hotel is surprisingly quiet making it a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring. For travellers looking for something beyond the standard hotel experience, it’s hard to beat a stay at the boutique AMOY and a stay comes highly recommended.
