Location
The Maldron Hotel enjoys a superb location in the heart of Newcastle city centre, making it an excellent base for both business and leisure travellers. For those arriving by train, Newcastle Central Station is just a five minute walk away, allowing for a very easy arrival and departure experience.

The hotel’s central position places many of the city’s key attractions within easy reach. Eldon Square, Newcastle’s principal shopping destination, is only a short walk away, while The Gate leisure complex, with its selection of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, is equally convenient. Football supporters will also find the location particularly appealing, with St James’ Park less than a ten-minute walk from the hotel.
Arrival and Check In

I arrived in Newcastle by train and was pleasantly surprised by how easy the Maldron Hotel was to reach from the station. Stepping through the entrance, I was greeted by a bright, contemporary lobby with an open-plan design that immediately felt welcoming and inviting.

The positive first impression continued at reception, where I received a warm and friendly welcome from a member of staff. The check-in process was handled efficiently, with my room key prepared within minutes. The receptionist also took the time to explain the breakfast arrangements and room service options, ensuring I had all the information I needed for a comfortable stay.
The Room

The Maldron Hotel offers 265 guest rooms, all decorated in the brand’s contemporary grey and mustard colour scheme. My room was located on the fourth floor and immediately felt comfortable and welcoming. Although I was travelling alone, I had been allocated a room featuring both a king-size bed and a single bed, providing plenty of space to spread out my belongings during my two-night stay without needing to make extensive use of the wardrobe.

The king-size bed featured an exceptionally comfortable mattress, which was particularly appreciated after a busy schedule of sightseeing and meetings. It ensured a restful night’s sleep and I found myself drifting off almost immediately each evening.

The room was thoughtfully furnished, with a circular table and two armchairs creating a comfortable space to enjoy a cup of tea from the well-stocked hospitality tray or catch up on work using a laptop. A large flat-screen television was positioned opposite the bed and featured built-in Chromecast, making it easy to stream content from personal devices.

Practical features had not been overlooked. There were plentiful power sockets and USB charging points on both sides of the bed, excellent reading lights, a laptop-sized safe and ample storage space. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the front of the hotel, with views across nearby shops and a bus stop. However, thanks to the double glazing and excellent soundproofing, I experienced no disturbance from outside noise throughout my stay.
The bathroom was equally impressive and exactly how I like a hotel en-suite to be: spacious, modern and well designed. It featured a generously sized walk-in shower with excellent water pressure, fragrant Field Day toiletries and a generous supply of thick, fluffy towels. Housekeeping serviced the room daily, replenishing the tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water, ensuring everything remained fresh and well stocked throughout my stay.
Dining

The hotel’s dining is centred around the ground floor Grain & Grill Restaurant, a large, glass-fronted space that overlooks a private outdoor courtyard garden. The breakfast buffet was impressive, offering a generous spread which included the classic full English alongside fresh pastries, fruit, cold cuts and yoghurts. The drink selection included juices, smoothies, tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

For an added touch of novelty, the hotel utilises a friendly room-service robot to deliver breakfast and light meals direct to guest rooms. As I was returning to my room after breakfast on the first morning, the robot came past me and I watched it enter one of the lifts as I was approaching.

Due to other commitments I didn’t have an opportunity to experience the evening dining options but on glancing at the menu, options ranged from gourmet burgers to stone-baked pizzas. The bar serves up an array of craft beers and cocktails, making it a brilliant spot for an al fresco drink in the courtyard during warm weather.
The Facilities

The Maldron is a four-star hotel offering a range of facilities designed to meet the needs of both leisure and business travellers. Located on the first floor, the well-equipped fitness suite features modern cardio machines and free weights, allowing guests to maintain their exercise routines during their stay.

The first floor also houses four versatile meeting rooms, centred around a stylish breakout lounge with comfortable seating and a self-service coffee station, providing an ideal setting for meetings, conferences, and informal networking.

While the hotel does not have its own car park due to its city-centre location, guests can take advantage of a discounted rate at the secure 24-hour Q-Park on Stowell Street, situated just a three-minute walk from the hotel.
Out and About

Thanks to its central location, exploring Newcastle from the Maldron Hotel requires very little planning. Guests can wander through the city’s historic Chinatown, browse the vibrant Grainger Market, and stroll along the elegant Grey Street, widely regarded as one of the finest streets in the UK. For those seeking evening entertainment, the magnificent Theatre Royal is just a short walk away.

Within 15 minutes of the hotel lies the famous Quayside, where visitors can enjoy a scenic walk along the River Tyne, taking in landmarks such as the Millennium Bridge and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, while also observing the city’s renowned kittiwake colony nesting along the river.

Both Central Station and Monument Metro stations are within a five-minute walk of the hotel, providing convenient connections to the beautiful coastline at Tynemouth in around 20 minutes, as well as direct access to Newcastle International Airport.
Overall
The Maldron Hotel Newcastle is a stylish, comfortable and exceptionally well located base from which to explore the city. Combining modern facilities with warm and efficient service, the hotel successfully caters to both business and leisure travellers without feeling overly corporate.

Its greatest strength is undoubtedly its location, placing many of Newcastle’s leading attractions, shopping districts, restaurants and transport links within easy walking distance. This is complemented by friendly and professional staff, comfortable and well-appointed rooms, excellent soundproofing and a high-quality breakfast offering.

Taken together, these features make the Maldron Hotel Newcastle an excellent value-for-money choice in the city centre. Whether visiting for a football match, a weekend shopping trip, a business stay or a city break, guests will find themselves perfectly positioned to enjoy everything Newcastle has to offer.
