Friday evening

Arrive in Newcastle on a Friday evening and check in to the Maldron Hotel, a modern four star hotel located in the heart of the city. Its central position makes it an ideal base for exploring Newcastle’s historic streets, cultural attractions and vibrant nightlife.

After settling in, take a leisurely walk along Grey Street, renowned for its elegant Georgian architecture and often considered one of the finest streets in Britain.

Saturday morning

On Saturday morning, begin your exploration with a two hour guided walking tour of the city centre. Newcastle Tour Company provide an excellent introduction to Newcastle’s history, taking in key landmarks such as Grey’s Monument, Newcastle Castle, Newcastle Cathedral, the historic Central Arcade and Quayside.

Along the way, guides explain how Newcastle developed from a medieval fortress town into one of Britain’s most important industrial and cultural centres. The route also offers excellent views of the famous Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Following the tour, make your way over to Grainger Market, a beautiful Victorian market that remains at the heart of local life. Here you can enjoy a traditional North East sausage sandwich while browsing the independent food stalls, bakeries and specialist traders that have made the market a favourite destination for generations of Newcastle residents.

Saturday afternoon

In the afternoon, visit the Lit & Phil, formally known as the Literary and Philosophical Society. Founded in 1793, it is one of the largest independent libraries in the United Kingdom and offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s intellectual and cultural heritage.

The impressive reading rooms and historic collections provide a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city centre. If time allows, attractions such as The Discovery Museum or a tour of St. James’ Park can easily be added to the afternoon itinerary.

Saturday evening

As evening approaches, head to Hotel Gotham Newcastle for drinks at FIRE Bar. Located within the beautifully restored former fire station. The venue combines stylish interiors with expertly crafted cocktails and a lively atmosphere. It provides an excellent setting to experience Newcastle’s contemporary social scene before enjoying dinner and spending the rest of the evening in the city.

Sunday

On Sunday morning, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before returning to the Quayside to appreciate the riverside views once more. The area showcases some of Newcastle’s most recognisable landmarks and reflects the city’s successful regeneration from industrial powerhouse to modern cultural destination.

Cross the river over the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge to reach the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, a striking, industrial-scale converted flour mill that stands as a beacon of modern creativity. While the vast interior hosts a rotating programme of cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions, the building’s exterior plays host to an entirely different kind of spectacle.

The Baltic is home to the furthest inland breeding colony of kittiwakes in the world. Head straight up to the Level 4 outdoor viewing platform to get an astonishingly close look at these ocean-going gulls, which return here every spring to nest precariously on the building’s narrow ledges. The air is thick with their sharp, cacophonous cries, creating a unique urban wildlife soundtrack that you won’t find anywhere else.

Leaving the gallery behind, take a look in the impressive GlassHouse concert venue then make your way back across the water for a leisurely stroll along the pedestrianised promenade of the Newcastle Quayside. Keep your eyes on the ground as you wander, tracing the “Local Heroes” trail embedded directly into the pavement. These bronze stars celebrate the region’s greatest cultural, sporting, and historic icons, from football legend Alan Shearer to musicians like Sting. As you follow the path, the famous Tyne river landscape unfolds beside you, framed by a spectacular lineup of engineering marvel at the city’s bridges that blend Newcastle’s industrial past with its modern flair.

Round off your Sunday in the city by stopping by the Quayside Sunday Market, which attracts tourists and locals alike to the riverside. Follow the rich aromas to the street food section of the market to grab a late lunch, where local vendors serve up everything from sizzling international dishes to freshly baked artisanal treats. Find a spot along the riverbank to eat, soaking up the iconic views of the Tyne Bridge one final time before your weekend comes to a close.
