Location:
Nestled in the peaceful countryside of County Durham, Rest at the Nest offers the perfect opportunity to switch off from the demands of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Set amongst rolling fields and overlooking a tranquil pond and surrounding countryside, this luxury retreat feels wonderfully secluded while still being within easy reach of some of County Durham’s most popular attractions. The setting is idyllic, with wildlife all around and uninterrupted views that immediately create a sense of calm from the moment you arrive. The location strikes the perfect balance between rural tranquillity and accessibility, making it an ideal base for a romantic getaway or relaxing short break.
Arrival and check-in:
Our arrival could not have been easier. Prior to our stay, we received clear instructions and a key code for contactless entry, allowing us to check in at our own pace. After parking beside the Wren Treehouse we were excited to climb up the short flight of metal steps and head inside.
Our first impression was stunning. Elevated above the surrounding landscape, the Wren Treehouse immediately felt special. Large windows and bi-folding doors flooded the entire space with natural light, while the contemporary design blended beautifully with the natural surroundings. It was instantly clear that every detail had been carefully considered to create a luxurious and memorable stay.
The Facilities:
The Wren Treehouse was beautifully furnished throughout, combining modern comfort with a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The open-plan design made excellent use of the spacious layout with a comfortable leather sofa, large dining table and a fully fitted kitchen. There was absolutely everything needed (and more) for a high-end self-catered stay. Whether we were preparing breakfast or an evening meal, plates, dishes, pots and pans were top quality and a pleasure to use. A welcome basket contained artisan chocolate, flavoured coffee, popcorn, honey and hot chocolate all sourced locally for guests to enjoy. Not only this but a useful tray containing cooking oil, tea, coffee, milk pods, and condiments – saving us from needing to bring these essential items from home.
The super king-size bed was incredibly comfortable and perfectly angled to take advantage of the countryside views. Waking up to the sight of herons on the pond and hares darting around was one of the highlights of our stay.
The bathroom was also luxurious, designed with high quality fittings from the spacious walk-in shower to the fragrant Bramley toiletries not to mention the luxuriously cosy Nest embroidered bathrobes and wonderfully thick towels.
Outside, the private balcony was a splendid extension of the living space. Furnished with two comfortable armchairs and a table, it was the perfect spot to return in the late afternoon to sit with a book and soak in the views.
On one corner of the balcony there was a large hot tub in which we both relaxed after dinner. After a day exploring some of County Durham’s top attractions, there was nothing better than sinking into the warm bubbling water while watching the sun set over the countryside.
Out and About:
Although it was tempting to spend our entire stay relaxing in the treehouse, we also took the opportunity to explore some of County Durham’s fantastic attractions.
One of our highlights was a visit to Locomotion in Shildon, located around 25 minutes from Rest at the Nest. This fascinating museum celebrates the region’s incredible railway heritage and is home to an impressive collection of historic locomotives and railway exhibits. The vast exhibition halls showcase everything from pioneering steam engines to modern rail innovations, making it a fantastic day out for both railway enthusiasts and families alike. The museum’s connection to the world’s first passenger railway adds even greater significance to the experience and provides a fascinating insight into the North East’s role in shaping modern transport.
We also spent a day exploring Beamish Museum, which is approximately 30 minutes from the treehouse. Beamish is one of the UK’s most immersive visitor attractions and offers a remarkable journey through the history of North East England. Costumed staff, historic buildings, vintage transport and carefully recreated streets transport visitors back to different periods of the region’s past. From riding traditional trams and visiting old-fashioned shops to exploring pit villages and 1950s homes, there is something fascinating around every corner. It’s easy to spend an entire day there and still feel as though there is more to discover. The attention to detail throughout the museum is exceptional and makes history feel genuinely alive.
Overall
Our stay in the Wren Treehouse at Rest at the Nest exceeded expectations. From the beautiful countryside setting and luxurious accommodation to the private hot tub and thoughtful design touches, everything has been created with relaxation in mind.
The peaceful location made it easy to completely unwind, yet there were plenty of attractions within a short drive for those guests wishing to explore the wider area. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a romantic escape or simply looking for somewhere to recharge and slow down, Rest at the Nest offers the perfect retreat.
We left feeling refreshed and totally relaxed. For anyone seeking a unique and memorable stay in County Durham, Rest at the Nest is an absolute gem and our stay in the Wren Treehouse very special.
