Wetherby is conveniently located just off the A1(M), making it an easy drive from nearby cities like Leeds and York. Once you arrive, you’ll find several central car parks offering up to four hours of free parking, perfect for a stress-free visit. From there, everything is within easy walking distance.

Morning: Riverside walks

Start your day with a peaceful wander along the banks of the River Wharfe. The riverside walk is one of Wetherby’s highlights as it lies very close to the town centre. You’ll soon come across the historic Wetherby Bridge which is one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks, spanning the River Wharfe. Dating back centuries, this ancient stone bridge once served as a vital crossing point for travellers and traders passing through Wetherby. Today, it remains a picturesque focal point, offering beautiful views of the river and surrounding countryside.

As you continue, pause at the charming riverside tables which are perfect for a picnic. Pick up some treats from a local bakers and enjoy a relaxed mid-morning break by the water. If you’re lucky, you might spot anglers trying their hand at fishing in the river or along the riverbanks.

A highlight of the riverside is the striking Salmon Spawning Sculpture by Michael Liesener. Created to celebrate the millennium, this piece reflects the natural life cycle of salmon in the River Wharfe and adds a modern artistic touch to the historic setting.

Nearby, you’ll find the weir, the old Garth, and the remnants of a water wheel — reminders of Wetherby’s industrial past and its long relationship with the river.

Afternoon: Gardens and shopping

Shame on me- I’ve never managed the Wetherby Whaler, Marion! It’s very much a town I’ve passed by, or occasionally through, but never made a destination xx

With its proximity to the A1 I’m sure that many people pass by without taking time to visit Jo. It’s a lovely small town and especially beautiful on a sunny, Spring day with all the flowers in bloom.
