Fraser Suites Hamburg

Fraser Suites Hamburg Review

Location:

Fraser Suites Hamburg is a luxurious five star hotel enjoying a prime location in the heart of Hamburg’s historic banking district. Housed in the beautifully restored Oberfinanzdirektion regional tax office building, the property is located just moments from the City Hall and many of Hamburg’s most recognisable landmarks.

The area blends old-world architecture with modern city life, making it ideal for visitors who want to explore on foot. Public transport links are also nearby, making it easy to reach the harbour, museums and the lively St. Pauli district.

We arrived into Hamburg on an early morning flight from London Heathrow, which was a bonus as we were departing the arrivals hall by 10.00 a.m. From there we took Regional Train S1 directly to Stadthausbrücke station (journey time 32 minutes followed by a three minute walk to the hotel).

Fraser Suites felt impressive from the moment we approached its grand stone façade. The building’s stately entrance hints at its history, and stepping into the lobby reinforced that sense of heritage mixed with contemporary style. We were greeted by a smartly dressed concierge who took our luggage before leading us to the front desk where we were attended to promptly by a very polite receptionist.

Check-in was both friendly and professional, quickly taking care of formalities while offering helpful information about the hotel and the surrounding area. We were then escorted to our suite on the third floor for a show round of its amenities.

Our Suite:

We had been booked into one of the hotel’s signature one-bedroom suites which struck a perfect balance between historic character and understated comfort. The approach to the room was along a wide sweeping corridor with a few stone steps marking the entrance to the suite itself which added to the sense of occasion. We especially loved that the hotel has preserved its original heavy wooden doors, passing through one of them before reaching our actual suite door gave the whole experience a unique and distinctive feel as if stepping into a private apartment within a grand historic building.

Our suite was spacious, stylish and thoughtfully designed. High ceilings and large windows allowed plenty of natural light, giving the room an airy feel while still maintaining a cosy atmosphere. The décor balanced modern furnishings with subtle nods to the building’s historic character.

The living area offered a comfortable space to relax after a day of sightseeing with its comfortable sofa and armchair. The large screen television at the foot of the bed could be rotated allowing it to be viewed from either position. The living area also boasted a fully equipped kitchenette with hob, microwave, fridge and washing machine. The cupboards contained a full range of high end pots, pans, crockery and glasses making it feel like a home from home with guests having the option of catering for themselves and/or dining in the hotel’s restaurant.

The fridge contained a complimentary mini bar stocked with beer, soft drinks, popcorn, water and milk and with both a Nespresso maker and kettle, we had everything on hand for a leisurely stay. The suite also boasted a table and chairs which could be utilised for both dining and as a work space.

Moving into the bedroom, this felt calm and restful. We were asleep in seconds tucked under our light as air duvet dressed in crisp white bedlinen. The bedside tables incorporated reading lights, ample plug sockets and USB points for charging our devices. The bathroom was equally impressive, featuring high-quality fixtures, a large shower, separate bath tub, luxurious  L’Occitane en Provence toiletries and wonderfully thick bathrobes, slippers and towels.

Our suite was serviced twice daily as on returning to our room after dinner a turn-down service had taken place with curtains closed, chocolates left on the pillow and slippers laid out beside the bed – what more could we wish for.

Dining:

While Fraser Suites Hamburg is primarily an all-suite residence, meals can be enjoyed in the hotel’s Quintessenz restaurant which is a relaxed setting for dining. From the moment we were seated in the grand hall of the former tax office, the evening unfolded with a quiet sense of occasion. The grandeur of the restaurant with its many original features including high arched windows and mahogany cupboards, offered a stunning atmosphere to what became a truly memorable dining experience.

We began with a delicate beef carpaccio which was beautifully presented with a refined flavour, setting the tone perfectly for what was to follow. For mains, my guinea fowl was expertly cooked, tender and full of flavour whilst across the table, the beef cheeks were a standout, being meltingly soft, rich and deeply satisfying. Dessert was no less impressive as we enthused over our choices of crème caramel, which was silky and perfectly balanced and the cheesecake which was indulgent without being too heavy.

The extensive wine list was equally noteworthy and elevated further by Marlon, the sommelier, whose expert guidance was much appreciated. His wine recommendation complemented our dinner adding another layer of enjoyment to the meal. For a five star hotel, what struck us most was the value, as both the food and wine were thoughtfully priced for a luxury hotel making it an evening to savour in the heart of Hamburg.

Breakfast offered a varied selection of fresh pastries, yoghurts, fruit, fish, cheese and cooked meats whilst hot dishes were served to the table with our omelettes on both mornings being light and fluffy oozing with our choice of fillings. We rounded off our breakfast with a second cappuccino before heading out to explore the city.

The Facilities:

We appreciated the range of facilities on offer, spending time in the stylish cocktail bar which was perfect for a relaxed pre-dinner drink.

We also made good use of one of the comfortable lounges to unwind after a day of sightseeing. For corporate guests there are meeting rooms of various sizes which are also suitable for family gatherings and private parties. Although we didn’t have time to utilise it ourselves, the hotel also boasts a relaxing spa, sauna suite and a well equipped fitness centre for guests use.

Guests can also enjoy several other comfortable seating areas throughout the property, perfect for relaxing or catching up on work. The atmosphere everywhere felt very calm and refined with the historic architecture adding character to the modern amenities.

Fraser Suites looks (and sounds) every bit like a five-star accommodation – just the entrance alone is impressive (I love that huge door). The architecture in general is stunning, and I can see that you certainly had a wonderful time here.

The former tax office has been superbly transformed into a luxury hotel and it’s really beautiful. The kitchenettes are a great idea, especially for guests staying for longer periods. Thanks so much for your interest Linda.

Your post shows why this place has 5 stars Marion. Fit and finish are top notch and food and service looks great. I assume they have accessible suites as well, as those stairs up to the room would be an impediment. Thanks for sharing. Allan

I’m currently in a hotel room with building work going on in the lobby next door; that’s the sort of inconvenience I can’t imagine happening at the Fraser Suites. The décor is tasteful, just as you describe the service.
