A Final Excursion to Beautiful Heidelberg

It was hard to believe that we had reached our final full day on board our Riviera Resplendence Rhine cruise. The week had passed incredibly quickly, yet it felt as though we’d packed so many wonderful experiences into just a few days. After another leisurely breakfast, it was time for our final included excursion – one I’d been especially looking forward to as our destination was the historic university city of Heidelberg.

Comfortable coaches were waiting for us as always, and before long we were travelling through the beautiful German countryside towards one of the country’s most famous cities. Once again, everything organised by Riviera Travel ran like clockwork. As we arrived close to the riverside, our local guides were already waiting to welcome us and lead us on another fascinating walking tour.

Throughout the week we had been consistently impressed by the quality of the local guides. Every one of them had been knowledgeable, enthusiastic and clearly passionate about sharing the history and culture of their city, and today’s guide was no exception.

Discovering One of Germany’s Most Beautiful Cities

Heidelberg proved to be a superb excursion choice with its elegant streets, impressive historic buildings and lively atmosphere created by one of Germany’s oldest universities, it definitely felt like somewhere we could return to and happily spend several days exploring.

Our walking tour took us through many of the city’s highlights, beginning in Karlsplatz, one of Heidelberg’s most attractive squares. It was surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and with wonderful views towards the famous castle overlooking the city.

We continued through the charming old town, where narrow streets were lined with cafés, independent shops and beautifully maintained buildings full of character. One of the highlights was visiting the magnificent Church of the Holy Spirit, whose impressive architecture dominates the historic centre. We also stepped inside the nearby Jesuit Church, whose striking white interior was unlike any church we had visited during the cruise. Its bright, elegant decoration gave it a completely different atmosphere from the more traditional churches we had explored elsewhere along the Rhine.

Walking Across Heidelberg’s Famous Old Bridge

Our guided walk eventually brought us to one of Heidelberg’s most recognisable landmarks – the magnificent Old Bridge crossing the River Neckar. The impressive stone bridge, with its distinctive gateway towers and enormous supporting arches has become one of the city’s defining landmarks.

We paused there for plenty of photographs while admiring the wonderful views back towards Heidelberg Castle, the colourful old town and the surrounding wooded hills. It was another picture-perfect setting and a wonderful way to round off our final excursion of the cruise.

Time to Explore at Our Own Pace

Following the guided tour, we had some free time before returning to our coach. As always, we preferred wandering independently rather than sitting in a café, allowing ourselves time to browse the attractive shopping streets and simply enjoy soaking up the atmosphere.

One of the great advantages of travelling on a Rhine river cruise is that every excursion provides just the right balance between guided sightseeing and independent exploration. The guided walks help you discover the highlights and learn about each destination, while the free time allows you to enjoy places at your own pace.

Returning to Riviera Resplendence n Nierstein

Before long, it was time to return to the coach and make our way back to the ship, which was waiting for us in  Nierstein.

One Last Afternoon Sailing the Rhine

Lunch was served shortly after we returned on board, and as we enjoyed another excellent meal, the Riviera Resplendence slipped away from its mooring and continued its final journey towards  Mannheim. Knowing it would be our last opportunity to enjoy the sun deck made us appreciate it even more. We found our favourite loungers, soaked up the warm sunshine and simply watched the beautiful Rhine scenery glide peacefully past once more. There was a slightly bittersweet feeling as we realised this would be our final afternoon of cruising. Over the course of the week, life on board had settled into such an enjoyable routine that it already felt strange to think it would soon be coming to an end.

One Final Outstanding Dinner

That evening we gathered for our final dinner on board. As always, the food was beautifully presented, expertly prepared and served with the warm, attentive hospitality that had become such a hallmark of the cruise. Looking back over the week, we realised just how consistently excellent the dining had been. Every meal had offered something different, from regional specialities and elegant fine dining to wonderful afternoon teas and unexpected treats such as the ice cream social.

Of course, it wasn’t just the food that we’d miss. We’d become so accustomed to being looked after by the outstanding crew that it was difficult to imagine returning to everyday life. Every member of staff, from housekeeping and restaurant servers to the bar team and reception staff, had gone out of their way to make guests feel genuinely welcome. Their friendliness and professionalism had played a huge part in making the holiday so memorable.

An Evening Walk Around Mannheim

As the ship remained docked overnight in Mannheim, we decided to make the most of our final evening ashore. A pleasant stroll through the nearby park soon brought us into the city centre, where we admired several of Mannheim’s best-known landmarks.

Among them was the magnificent  Mannheim Palace, one of the largest Baroque palaces in Europe, along with the impressive façade of Mannheim’s main railway station. We also visited the beautiful Jesuit Church and admired the city’s iconic Old Water Tower, one of Mannheim’s best-loved landmarks and a popular meeting place for both locals and visitors.

Although Mannheim has a very different feel from some of the smaller historic towns we’d visited during the week, it provided an enjoyable final glimpse of life along the Rhine.

Farewell to New Friends

Back on board, many guests gathered in the lounge for one last drink together. It was a lovely opportunity to say goodbye to the friends we’d made throughout the week, particularly those who would be leaving very early the following morning to catch flights home. One of the nicest aspects of river cruising is how quickly friendships develop. Sharing meals, excursions and evenings together naturally brings people together, and by the end of the week many familiar faces had become good friends.

A Relaxed Journey Home

Unlike many of our fellow passengers, we were fortunate that our flight back to Manchester wasn’t until late afternoon. That meant there was no need for an early alarm or a rushed departure. Instead, we were able to enjoy one final leisurely breakfast on board, say our goodbyes to the wonderful crew, collect our belongings and board our transfer coach to the airport feeling completely relaxed.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Riviera Resplendence Rhine Cruise

Looking back over the week, it was difficult to pick out just one highlight. Every day had brought something completely different, from exploring historic cities and charming riverside towns to relaxing on board while watching the magnificent Rhine scenery unfold around us.

A huge part of the cruise’s success was undoubtedly down to the exceptional crew, whose professionalism and friendliness never faltered throughout the week. Special thanks must also go to our outstanding Cruise Director, André, whose organisation ensured every excursion ran to plan and to Cruise Host  Paula, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes organising entertainment, morning exercises and helping guests throughout the cruise. Together they created a wonderfully relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that made everyone feel at home.
