Scandic Gothenburg Central Review

Location:

The Scandic Gothenburg Central is located in a port-inspired glass building overlooking the Göta Älv harbour inlet and within 15 minutes walk from Gothenburg Central Station.

Arrival and check-in:

We arrived into Gothenburg Landvetter Airport on a late evening flight and from outside the arrivals hall took the airport bus into the city centre. The airport shuttle operates every 20 minutes and conveniently terminates at the bus station just a 7 minute walk from the hotel.

After mounting a flight of neon lit steps up to the entrance we passed through the revolving doors into a large, brightly furnished open-plan lobby. The reception desks stand to one side and as no-one else was waiting to check-in, we were attended to straightaway. We were asked at what time we would prefer breakfast so we opted for 8.30 a.m. on all three mornings and were also informed that as the hotel has a ‘green key’ policy that rooms would only be serviced by housekeeping on request by 23.59 the previous evening.

The Room:

Formalities over, we took one of the fast lifts up to our room on the 8th floor. As with other Scandic hotels we have stayed in, the room was of a good size and decorated in neutral Scandi style shades. The room had a double height ceiling, wooden floors and large floor to ceiling windows overlooking the port area.

The king size bed was very comfortable, had ample power sockets and USB charging points and angled bedside lamps allowing me to read in bed. Minor drawbacks were the lack of storage space as there were no drawers or shelves to store clothes and only a coat stand with four hangers. For guests staying only one night this would be acceptable but staying longer, I would have preferred to hang my clothes up rather than leave them in the suitcase.

The en-suite shower room came with a powerful rainfall shower, high end toiletries and thick, fluffy towels. Unlike the bedroom, the bathroom had ample room to store wash bags and make up on the counter.

Dining:

Breakfast is served each morning in the large restaurant to one side of the lobby. As the hotel is very large the dining area has been cleverly divided into sections each themed by continents. On the first two mornings we were seated in Asia which was adorned with Chinese lamps and Japanese pagoda style ornaments whilst on the final morning we were seated in the European section.

I always enjoy my breakfasts at Scandic hotels with their vast offerings of cold cuts of meat, cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurts, salad, porridge etc.

After sampling some of the cold items I decided to take a soft boiled egg from the hot food area. So many times I have tapped into a so called soft egg only to find it hard and unappetising but the ones here in Gothenburg were cooked to perfection and delicious accompanied by a slice of Swedish dark rye bread.

The Facilities:

Lobby Bar

This large, modern hotel features 451 guest rooms with a meeting capacity for up to 1,000 delegates. Along one wall in the lobby there’s an attractive bar incorporating a pizza cafe at one end. Seating ranges from comfy armchairs to long tables ideally suited for groups of friends or conference delegates. It was also good to see a co-working area, useful for catching up on emails and also for charging devices. Wi-Fi was easy to connect to and worked well.

There’s also a splendid Miami inspired rooftop restaurant called ‘Above’ which is located up on the 14th floor offering stunning harbour views. With both indoor and outdoor seating it’s the perfect place for a weekend dinner and / or a sunset cocktail. In addition to the hotel’s restaurants, there’s also a small shop selling snacks, chocolate etc. located close to the reception area.

Other facilities include a well equipped gym on the first floor and free bicycle hire from the hotel lobby. Parking for guests cars is available in the basement at an extra charge.

Overall:

Our stay at the Scandic Hotel Gothenburg Central was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. The hotel’s modern design, welcoming atmosphere and convenient central location made it an ideal base for exploring the city. We especially appreciated the comfortable rooms and the excellent breakfast selection that set us up perfectly each morning. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding a personal touch that made us feel genuinely valued as guests. Overall, it was a relaxing stay and we would happily return on our next visit to Gothenburg.

We stayed here a few years ago, 2023 I think. We prefer the Radisson across town, but this hotel was a really good base and we absolutely loved the restaurant 🙂

It’s interesting that the restaurant represents different continents – I suppose it keeps mealtimes exciting, right? It looks like a very modern hotel and I’m glad to hear you had a good stay.

The themed dining sections sound like a neat concept. Glad to hear you had a good stay. The lack of storage space though doesn’t sound ideal though.

The hotel was really nice but it would be better if they put in more storage as the rooms are quite spacious. Hope you have a great weekend!

…. Is an ideal base for a Gothenburg city break but I do wish they’d incorporate some storage/hanging space into their guest rooms.

Looks like a nice hotel, but like you, we prefer to have space to hang clothes up. Wonderfully modern and great services otherwise. Have a great Thursday Marion. Allan

Exactly Allan – a lovely modern hotel in a great location that just needs to add storage / hanging space into its rooms.
