Sand Lark on hire from ABC Wrenbury Mill Marina

Sand Lark narrowboat on the Llangollen Canal

This was to be our fourth U.K. canal boat holiday as we’d really caught the bug. Narrow-boating is the perfect way to slow down, unwind and connect with nature whilst chugging along canals at no more than walking speed.

This time around we’d opted to take a seven night cruise from the pretty village of Wrenbury in Cheshire along the Llangollen Canal into Wales and back again. We hired our boat from ABC Boat Hire, who are part of the Drifters group. Our adventure would take us over the famous Pontcysyllte aqueduct known as the stream in the sky and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This post will introduce readers to our well equipped narrowboat.

Our floating home for the week was aboard Sand Lark, a 66ft long narrowboat sleeping up to six guests. There were just three of us on board for the week so we arranged to have the cabins configured as one double and one twin. For larger groups, the dinette in the lounge can easily be converted overnight into an extra double bed. All bed linen is provided and we found the mattresses to be very comfortable, sending us to sleep soon after our heads touched the pillow.

The modern galley kitchen came with everything necessary for a pleasant stay, in fact it felt like spending a week in a holiday cottage with the benefit of waking up to a different view from the windows each morning. With a built-in oven and grill, hob, under counter fridge, kettle, cafetière, toaster, microwave, pots, pans and utensils, we had the option of dining in or eating out at a canal side pub, wherever ever the mood took us.

The bright and airy living area had a fixed corner seat with two further drop down seats around the good sized table. We enjoyed breakfast each morning there and occasional evening meals when it was a bit chilly to dine on the foredeck. Around the table was our favourite place to gather for our evening board games accompanied by nibbles and a glass of wine.

Although we didn’t use them much, there were two small televisions on board, a radio and best of all, unlimited Wi-Fi. This was the first boat we have hired with unlimited Wi-Fi meaning that one could effectively work on board for part of the cruise if needed.

A table could easily be attached to the foredeck and as the weather was beautiful on all but one day of our boat trip, we utilised this a great deal as it was so lovely to be outdoors breathing in the fresh, country air.

Over my next two posts I will detail the boat trip and everything there is to see and do along the way so do stay tuned to find out more.

Details: Drifters Boat Hire, Wrenbury Mill to Llangollen – duration 7 nights, 24 locks and an average cruising time of 5.5 hours per day.

Ahh, it’s time for narrow-boating again! Sand Lark looks like a good choice and you’re right, it has everything one would find in a holiday cottage. I especially like the table out on the foredeck – it seems like the perfect place to relax while you cruise on the canal.

You have definitely caught the narrowboat bug, Marion! The Sand Lark is delightful, and I’m looking forward to reading more about this canal trip. I love the idea of slow travel, which is the perfect antidote to all the rushing about we do. I’m trying to persuade family and friends to join me!

I can see why you really enjoy these canal boat trips. Seems like a leisurely and lovely way to travel. Your bout looks comfortable and I love how you can even sit outside. Looking forward to hearing more about your holiday.

Thanks Linda. We took our boat trip a little earlier in the year which meant we could sit outside more and with the longer days we could also continue chugging along until late evening. I’d recommend this sort of holiday for when your family is a little older as children can help out with tasks on board and no-one ever gets bored.

What a wonderfully cozy and inviting scene you’ve painted! ☀️ There’s something so special about a dedicated space that becomes the heart of a home—or in this case, a boat. It sounds like that bright, airy nook with its fixed corner seat was the perfect spot to start the day with breakfast and unwind in the evenings. 🥐🍷 The image of your group gathered around that good-sized table for board games, nibbles, and wine, especially when the foredeck was a bit too chilly, is just so warm and full of joy. 🎲✨ It sounds like it was the perfect hub for making beautiful memories!

Absolutely. I called our narrowboat trip “the discovery of slowliness”. Mary and I still think of it as of our best holiday in England.

You’re welcome. I have a daily diary of that trip on my other blog, “Pit’s Bilderbuch”. But since I haven’t been writing that in proper sequence, it’s a bit awkward to follow.

What I wanted to add: the two most important books on that trip were the Canal Guide and the “Good Pub Guide”. 😉 We always planned for the nights to be in walking distance of a pub because we really like British pub food.

The amenities make the boat very comfortable for a week’s vacation, despite the limited space. The elegant decor really makes people want to come and spend a few days/nights here.

What another leisurely boat trip! Looks like taking such trips is your signature, Marion. The narrowboat certainly looks, well, narrow, but despite the tight quarters, it looks cozy and comfortable for a ride along the water 🙂

The boats need to be narrow to fit through the locks. The boats are so long we use our phones if we need to make contact between each ends! Great fun though.

It does look idyllic, we have seen them from the shore. How big is the learning curve to pilot the boat?

It’s a lovely, relaxing way to travel Terry. I feel certain that mostly anyone could get the hang of steering and manoeuvring the canal boats through locks within a couple of hours tuition from the boatyard.

It’s docked not far from where they used to live in Send. They’ve tended not to stray too far largely on account of dog and grand children sitting.

The Sand Lark narrowboat trip along the Llangollen Canal looks so peaceful, and I enjoyed how you described both the practical side of canal boating and the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. It really shows how slow travel can make the journey itself such a memorable experience.

Similarly, an Alleppey Houseboat in Kerala offers a unique way to explore the backwaters, where the accommodation and the journey blend together to create something truly special.

A lovely read that captures the charm of life on the water.
