During the morning we took the MRT and then a bus to Changi Point village from where we caught a bum boat over to the small island of Pulau Ubin.

The small island is situated off the north east coast of Singapore and unlike Sentosa is largely undeveloped. Boats don’t run to a timetable, instead they depart when fully occupied with 12 passengers.

We didn’t have to wait too long to set off with the fare being $2.50 each (one way) for the 12 minute journey.  The jetty was very welcoming, being decorated with brightly coloured bunting and red Chinese lanterns.

There were bicycles everywhere for hire but as these are not allowed on the boardwalks we decided to walk.  It was a 25 minute walk to the start of the trail.  This is 3.5 km long and winds its way through mangrove swamps to the 21 metre high Jelawi viewing tower.  The tower is primarily for bird watching and viewing the tall, forest trees and mangroves from aloft, but it’s also good for plane spotters, as there are good views of aircraft coming into land at nearby Changi airport.

Nearby a small kiosk sold bottled water whilst several cafes are located near the ferry terminal.  We found this to be an excellent side trip, and is quite easy to access being such a contrast to the ultra modern city centre.

So nice to have a calm oasis in the middle of such an urban setting. Thanks for taking us there Marion. Allan

Few visitors seem to make it out to Pulau Ubin but if time allows it’s a glorious place to visit with some scenic walking trails.
